Britney Spears Musical Takeover 2011
Britney Spears musical takeover of 2011 begins with Hold It Against Me single.
When it comes to the music world much has changed over the last 10 years, but one thing remains the same. Don’t bet against Britney Spears. She has been written off many times in the past and she keeps coming back and coming back. Early in her career people said she would be a flash in the pan and nothing much more, but she showed she had staying power. A few years ago she had a very public breakdown and had some serious problems. She pulled herself together and ended up going out on the road and having one of the biggest, bestselling tours of the year. Now, pardon the pun, she has done it again.
Yesterday at midnight on 1/11/11 Britney Spears released her new single “Hold it Against Me” and within 24 hours it was shattering records. Immediately upon its release 40 different major market radio stations put it into heavy rotation. Audience response has been overwhelming as more and more stations add it and play it. It got enough airplay that it broke all records for most number of plays in one 24 hour period. Mediabase says its stations played the song 619 times and BDS played it another 595 times. To put that into perspective that means just between those two companies and the radio stations they own she got 1,214 plays. There are only 1,440 minutes in a day so across those two company’s stations Britney was getting played once every 1.18 minutes.
Add in that she shot to the top of the iTunes chart and it is easy to say that Spears has a bona fide hit on her hands and all of this doesn’t count the hundreds of thousands of plays she is getting on YouTube.
The song itself, from a lyrical standpoint, is nothing special. It has a driving, throbbing beat over which Britney moans about wanting to be physical in many different ways with someone she is into. What makes it work is Britney. Nobody sells sex like Britney. Even after 10 years, two marriages, two kids and everything we all know about her she still is able to turn on that naughty/innocent thing. There is something about her that is mix of sweet and innocent while at the same time being dirty and sexual that the public eats up. However she does it, it works and judging by the success of this single her new record due out in March should be huge. I think it is finally safe to say that Britney is not a flash in the pan and that she is not going anywhere. Just when you think she might be done, Britney Spears comes back like seemingly nobody else can and shows everyone just how it is done.
