Lights Out Series Premiere Preview on FX
Lights Out will premiere tonight at 10|9c on FX.
Tonight at 10pm on FX is the premiere of the new drama Lights Out. When I first saw the preview to this show I thought it might be a cheesy rip-off of the x-box game. As it turns out, it is a pretty heavy drama with some solid boxing and great acting.
The story centers around a man named Patrick Leary (Holt McCallany) who is a former heavyweight champion boxer. After taking a brutal beating in a most recent loss his wife Theresa (Catherine McCormack) begs him to retire. Against his will he listens to her and steps away from the ring.
At the outset it seems like Leary has it all. He has a loving, caring – if not attractive- wife he lives in a mansion and was at one time the heavyweight champion of the world. It is time for him to relax and enjoy the fruits of his labors. But five years later he is broke, the IRS is after him and he finds himself suffering from memory loss and occasional bouts of dementia that no doubt are the result of the repeated blows to the head he has taken. Leary finds himself caught in a situation where is about to lose everything he fought (literally) to get. He eventually finds himself between a rock and a hard place. Does he go to work for a local bookie collecting his debts or does he get back in the ring and collect a couple of last big pay days to get he and his family out of debt, but at serious risk to his health?
Lights Out follows Leary’s choices and the potential consequences of those choices as he learns what people really think of him and how they really treat him once he is no longer the champ. They say you find out who your real friends are when you fall down, Leary learns that reality out in spades and it makes for what could be another fascinating FX drama.
