Piers Morgan Tonight: Oprah, Howard Stern, Kim Kardashian
Piers Morgan Tonight premiere guest stars include Oprah, Howard Stern, Kim Kardashian, Ricky Gervais and George Clooney among others.
Piers Morgan has the unenviable task of replacing a legend one week from now. The legend is Larry King as Piers steps in and takes over King’s nightly talk show on CNN. As expected, the show will change names to Piers Morgan Tonight. Morgan is a little unproven in this arena. He was the standout member of the judge’s panel on America’s Got Talent and was a journalist in England, but reporting and judging are different skillsets than carrying on an interesting interview. Shows like this often interview their subjects for large portions of the, if not the entire, show. Anyone can sling together an interesting five minute fluff interview that you might see on Leno or Entertainment Tonight. Carrying on an interesting 30 minute interview is not as easy. It will be a real test of Morgan’s talent. Will having Kim Kardashian on the show boost the ratings?
He is starting off with a bang. His first guest next Monday will be Oprah Winfrey. The rest of the week is rounded out by Condoleeza Rice, Ricky Gervais, George Clooney and Howard Stern. Oprah and Stern are the two biggest gets on that list, but it is a good list. Both Oprah and Stern (Stern especially) rarely sit down for interviews. They prefer to hold court on their own shows. Both, however, have big projects to push right now. Stern just singed a new five year deal with Sirius XM Radio and Oprah just launched her own network called OWN.
While it looks like Morgan comes out swinging during his first week of shows, it is his second week that the reality of running a daily talk show settles in. He still has some name guest, but his week starts off with Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney then he brings in Kid Rock, The Kardashian Sisters and Donald Trump and Melania Trump to end his second week. It isn’t bad, but it is pretty pale in comparison. I actually look to his second week as his first big test. Every guest in his first week is a fascinating person so coming up with good material should be easy. Romney, Giuliani and Trump are all interesting people who will have opinions on a wide range of topics as well. Kid Rock might have an interesting story, but Morgan may have to challenge him to get a good interview. The hardest task he is going to face is making the Kardashian sisters look interesting for 60 minutes. If he can pull that off and not put the audience to sleep then he will know he is going to be able to do this job.
I personally would love to see Piers Morgan confront the Kardashians. Ask them about the debit card they got involved with that charged obscene fees. Ask Kim Kardashian how she responds to people who think she is famous because she made a sex tape and has a big ass. Ask them both how they feel when people criticize them about projecting everything you would normally try to teach your kids not to be. Most people would hope to teach their daughters to not trade on their looks and to have respect for money and other people and to not take things for granted and to actually get respect for your accomplishments, not your family name or who you hang with. But the Karashians seem to care only about their looks, take everything that was handed to them on a silver platter for granted and seem to revel in the reasons they are famous. That is the interview I want to see. If Morgan dresses them down, he will put himself on the map, but I doubt he will because if he attacks them, other people like them will not want to come on his show.
So Piers Morgan has his work cut out for him. I plan to tune in during the first week and see how it goes, after that, I guess I will have to wait and see.
