Chubby Checker Released The Twist 50 years old today.
That’s right, 50 years ago today, Chubby Checker, 68, released The Twist.
The Twist was not a overnight success though. It took Chubby almost 14 months for the Twist to become a hit. After recording The Twist in June of 1959, he would press on to promote the song he believed could be a hit. Then in the summer of 1960, The Twist shot up the charts. Who know that dancing with yourself, and not with the beat would be such a smash hit. Chubby returned in 1962 with the number 8 hit “Let’s Twist Again.”
The Twist not only inspired us to dance by ourselves, but it also inspired other artists to sing about the dance move. From songs like, “Peppermint Twist” from Joey D. and the Starlights, “Twist and Shout” from the Beetles and “Twisting the Night Away” from Sam Cooke. Not to mention countless drunk dancing twisting wannabes on the dance floor.
Chubby Checker is still actively touring and singing his hits. He preformed in his home town of Philadelphia at City Hall. His next show is July 16th at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino in Maricopa Arizona. See all of Chubby’s tour schedule, please click here.
