New Music Tuesday: The Lonely Island, Matthew Morrison, The Cars
While I’m sure everyone is still hyped over yesterday’s release of “The Edge of Glory” by Lady Gaga, today we have some excellent new music releases. Glee star Matthew Morrison releases his self-titled debut record this week; gleeks will go wild over this one. Saturday Night Live’s favorite white boys The Lonely Island release their brand new album entitled “Turtleneck & Chain” and The Cars release “Move Like This.”
First up we have the new record from The Lonely Island. For those who don’t know, The Lonely Island is made up of Saturday Night Live’s Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. The three rap, sing and talk their way through some hysterical songs. This is the team that has brought you such classics as “Dick in a Box” and “I’m on a Boat.” This new album called Turtleneck & Chain features some great songs including the instant class “Motherlover” that features Justin Timberlake. Their most recent single “Jack Sparrow” featuring Michael Bolton just debuted this last week on Saturday Night Live. Also included is “Great Day” and “I Just Had Sex” featuring Akon. Snoop Dogg, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Kenan Thompson also guest on the album. This is a two disc set that contains songs and videos. If you are a fan of these guys and their digital shorts on SNL, you will love this album.
Matthew Morrison releases his self-titled debut record this week. If that name is not familiar to you then you clearly are not a Glee fan. Fans of the show know him as Will Schuester the unlucky in love Spanish teacher who leads the Glee club. His debut album could easily be music that appears on the show. It is easy on the ears pop with some heart and soul. Matthew Morrison has a smooth voice that he sometimes reins back to keep things from sounding too much like a show tune, but for the most part he pulls off what is a nice, easy summer record. You can imagine the Glee club with this on their iPods.
Last but not least is the new album by The Cars called Move Like This. It has been 24 years since The Cars have released an album and this one sounds like they haven’t missed a beat. Rick Ocasek’s voice sounds just like it did in the 1980’s. Benjamin Orr passed away about ten years ago and his backing vocals are missed, but the rest of the band fills in admirably and does a hell of a job. The bottom line here is simple. If you are like me and grew up with classics like “Drive” and “You Might Think” blasting out of your car stereo, you will love this album. If you are new to The Cars get their greatest hits and prepare to fall in love.
With new releases by The Lonely Island, Matthew Morrison and The Cars, there is surely something for everyone. That about does it for this week’s edition of New Music Tuesday; tune in next week for more new releases!
